A year of preventive custody has been imposed on Pedro Gerardo Gutierrez from Venezuela and Dominican resident in Venezuela Ramon de los Santos Hernandez Peguero, both accused of complicity in the theft of a Beechcraft King Air registration N871C plane from the La Isabela International Airport (JBQ) on Sunday, 26 October. The plane, with an estimated value of US$2.5 million was found camouflaged in a field in Apure, Venezuela. Diario Libre confirms the plane belongs to the Grupo Puntacana. The procedure to return the plane is ongoing with Dominican, Venezuelan and US authorities given that the plane had US registration.
The authorities arrested the pair in Puerto Plata on Saturday. Helicopter pilot John Percival Matos is also in jail in connection with the case. The three men are accused of planning the robbery, said assistant prosecutor Wilton Gutierrez.
An editorial in El Caribe says that too many questions have been left unanswered in this case: "How is it possible that the two pilots suspected of having flown the airplane to Venezuela have returned? If they returned as if nothing had happened, why did they take the plane?"
