Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez will continue to head the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic. The Cardinal was confirmed in his post by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. This was revealed by the Cardinal himself as he said Mass on the occasion of his 75th birthday. The Code of Canon Law indicates that at 75 years of age, cardinals should present the papacy with a letter that places their post at the disposition of Supreme Pontiff.
Lopez Rodriguez reported that some days ago he personally delivered the letter to the Pope, but when the Pope asked about his health, he said that it was fine. His Holiness then asked him to stay on the job "for several more years." The Cardinal said that his continuation as head of the Dominican church would depend on the state of his health.
