72,000 Dominican public high school students are enrolled in the bilingual high school courses as part of a program called "Programa Bachilleres Bilingues Productivos". The program has been under way for the past two years in the Santo Domingo 10 zone of the Ministry of Education. It seeks to train students to work in the tourism industry or call centers. The program has a RD$32 million budget.

Juan Valdez, director for Professional Training Systems, the contractor, said that students receive four hours of English a day and support in books and CD Rom and CD audio, in addition to DVDs and interactive website sessions. The program is under way in 134 high schools. The aim is to give the students a better chance of finding jobs after they graduate, as reported in Listin Diario.

The newspaper interviewed students who described it as excellent and said that they had all learned a lot.
