In an interview with El Caribe, German ambassador Thomas Bruns shared updated statistics on DR-German relations. He explained that an average of 200,000-300,000 German tourists are visiting each year, and commented on the cruise ship that takes Germans who fly into Miami and then travel by cruise ship to Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata.

He observed that more Germans live in the DR than Dominicans in Germany. An estimated 3,000 Dominicans live in Germany, while an estimated 15,000 Germans live in the DR. The largest community is in Sosua, Puerto Plata.

He announced that both countries were working towards an agreement for protection and promotion of investments.

"The DR has a good image in Germany. It is a country that is well known in Germany," said the diplomat.

The trade balance is now at US$260 million, with Germany exporting US$150 million to the DR and importing US$110 million.

He estimated German direct investment in the DR at US$100 million, adding that the DR benefits from technical and financial development cooperation from Germany, which he said was worth approximately 250 million euros.
