Traveling along the Boulevard Turistico del Atlantico from the El Catey Airport to Coson, in Las Terrenas, Samana cuts driving time by around 20 minutes, and eliminates the stress and hazards of the winding road over the peninsula hills between Sanchez and Las Terrenas. However, using the new 24km route comes at a high price: RD$450 in tolls. A trip on the two toll roads to Samana costs RD$1,638 or RD$819 each way. Travel on the Autopista del Nordeste, now the Juan Pablo II Highway, already costs RD$369 for the 120kms from Santo Domingo. Toll roads cut driving time from four hours on the Santo Domingo-Nagua-Sanchez-La Terrenas route.
The first stretch of the Boulevard Turistico del Atlantico was opened to the public on 25 October.
The cost for minibuses is RD$3,328 and for large trucks RD$6,154.
