The president of the Dominican Olympic Committee has expressed his opposition to the construction of new multi-sports installations in the Dominican Republic. He said that the ones that have already been built are enough. Luisin Mejia called for a stop to construction into 2015. "We are urging for maintenance of the ones that we have, as of the multi-sport courts, which surely will be for the benefit of sports," he told El Caribe in an interview.

Today's Listin Diario reports that the government is planning complete the construction of 56 multi-use sports facilities in a program with a US$63 million loan under the PetroCaribe agreement with Venezuela in 2002 for the construction of 135 such installations. Most of the multi-use courts have not been completed. The newspaper says this could mean a RD$800 million investment to complete the work that would appeal to young voters nationwide in an election year. The young voter segment of the population is lagging, according to polls.
