The Dominican Republic is fifth in Latin America when it comes to the number of teen pregnancies, with one of the very highest rates in the region for young women between the ages of 15 and 19, with 92 pregnancies for every 1,000 women. Indiana Barinas, director of health at the Ministry of Women said they feared that this trend is set to continue in future.
Angela Polanco, of the United Nations Population Fund Sex and Reproduction Office said that 153,358 pregnancies were reported in 2010, of which 28,434 occurred in young women between the ages of 15 and 19, and 47,508 in women between the ages of 20 and 24. The specialists were speaking during a workshop "New Sociopolitical Dynamics and Young People in the Caribbean: Building the Future for the Region," as reported in Diario Libre.
