President Leonel Fernandez toured some of Santo Domingo's barrios yesterday, making brief appearances to check on the progress of a street-repaving program. A report in El Nuevo Diario said that the President was supervising some projects that were being implemented in response to demands from community leaders. During one of the stops on the tour, the President revealed that he was ordering 3,000 more police agents out on patrol duties in the barrios to counteract the rising crime rate in the area. He said that he attended a meeting of the Superior Police Council last week where they agreed on a series of crime fighting measures. The President said that the projects he was visiting were the result of the Popular Dialogue held last 8 August with representatives of 19 barrios in northern Santo Domingo. The tour took the presidential entourage through Capotillo, Guachupita, Maria Auxiliadora, Espaillat, 27 de Febrero and Simon Bolivar.
