The Attorney General of the Dominican Republic, Radhames Jimenez Pena, said on Monday that his office guarantees the life of former National Police lieutenant Fernando de los Santos (La Soga). The infamous former officer is wanted by the authorities on charges arising from the contract killing of two young men in Santiago. Allegedly, a drug dealer from San Francisco de Macoris paid the officer RD$250,000 for the killing. According to sources, the newspaper said that the two men had stolen US$100,000 from the alleged drug dealers in San Francisco de Macoris. They had been bound and shot and dumped into the waters of the Tavera Dam. Jimenez Pena said that if the former lieutenant turns himself in peacefully there would be no problems, but warned against challenging the people who are looking for him.

However, in today's Hoy newspaper, Senator Wilton Guerrero, the PLD senator from Bani, said that some Police officials are hiding La Soga because they do not want him to be captured and talk. He said that if La Soga talks, "a lot of idols will fall, especially among the ranks of the generals."

Guerrero called for protection for La Soga because he said sectors within the Police itself are interested in eliminating him to avoid being implicated in crimes. He said that while some are protecting him, others would like to see him dead. Guerrero called for La Soga to captured alive so he can be questioned and sent to Justice.
