Three months jail for Willy Aybar

Despite his wife Brunilda Victoria de Aybar withdrawing her initial accusation of violence against her husband, former Tampa Rays infielder Willy Aybar, the National District prosecutor sent him to three months preventive jail. News commentators say the aim is to create a precedent to discourage domestic violence in the country. The withdrawal of the accusation would normally mean that the charges against Aybar would have been dropped and the case set aside. Judge Alejandro Vargas said he took the decision based on Aybar's record of gender violence in the DR and the US.
