Speaking at a press conference in Miami, Florida yesterday, the head of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), Assistant Secretary William R. Brownfield, warned that Caribbean nations need to take special measures to prevent drug traffickers from returning to the region as a major transshipment point to US and European markets. He said that as drug traffickers were "being chased out of Mexico" they are likely to return to traditional routes through the Caribbean. The DR is a target because of its central geographical position.

He was speaking during a media roundtable discussion, where following meetings of the US Southern Command, those present discussed emerging drug smuggling trends in Central America and the Caribbean.

He warned of the increasing use of sophisticated submarines and semi-submersible vessels to ship cocaine.

Brownfield was in Miami this week for meetings between US ambassadors in Latin America and their counterparts at the State Department in Washington at the US Southern Command headquarters.

Brownfield is a former US ambassador to Venezuela and Colombia.

During the press conference, Brownfield warned the Dominican government of a massive influx of drug trafficking operators in the next two or three years. He urged the country to install cooperation mechanisms, create infrastructure and a coalition of Caribbean nations to resist the new aggressive influx of drug traffickers to the region. He argued that matters are worse because of a lack of cooperation from the authorities in Venezuela.

Brownfield said that when more resources are poured into Mexico and Central America to fight trafficking, it would displace itself to the Caribbean.
