Tomorrow is the last day to renew the vehicle license plates, known as "el marbete." This is the little sticker that is placed on the front windshield. According to the Tax Department (DGII) some 25% of vehicle owners have yet to renew their vehicle registrations. Virginia Gomez, in charge of the Department of Motor Vehicles at the DGII, together with the commander of the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET), Major General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian, spoke about the progress of renewals at a press conference. There is still time to renew the "marbetes" at any bank branch, and also at any of the DGII offices until 5pm tomorrow. The Internet renewal process is no longer an option. After tomorrow, there will be a RD$600 late fee for all renewals. AMET is authorized to stop and impound vehicles without renewal stickers, and there is also a hefty fine and towing charge.
