Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul, accused Amnesty International (AI) yesterday of wanting "to damage the tourism" that comes to the Dominican Republic with its report on supposed human rights violations by the National Police. El Nuevo Diario said that Fadul was unhappy with the report by Javier Zuniga of Mexico, who headed the AI delegation in the Dominican Republic. The AI report said that there were high levels of violence, similar to those in Mexico, and Fadul said that this would scare away tourists. During a television interview, Fadul said that these documents (the AI reports) are nearly always placed in airports and given to tourist guides with the aim of damaging the country's tourism industry. The report says that 154 people were killed by the Police between January and July 2011, compared to the 125 killed the previous year. Statistics from the Attorney General's office showed that 10% of all the killings in 2010 were by the Police, according to Amnesty International, which also says that many Police agents lost their lives. Despite the fact that the AI document quotes 'official information' from the Attorney General, Fadul said that the representative of the agency did not consult the Police or the Ministries that were affected.
