180 of the nearly 400 Police stations in the country are in rented premises and are currently in really sad shape, according to Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco Gomez. Polanco mentioned cases where the monthly rent is as high as RD$50,000. He said that in many cases the owners of these properties do not allow the Police to repair them and in other cases the owners want the building returned. For this reason, the National Police are seeking new quarters for many of their posts. Polanco also talked about the lack of equipment in some stations, telling El Caribe reporter Julia Ramirez that they receive complaints from people who end up sending people to type up, or write up the reports and print on computers, before being signed by the agents on duty. He said: "This is impossible, this cannot be allowed; we are going to find out where this is happening and we are going to correct it."
