The Department of Customs (DGA) has announced that the duty free exemption for Dominicans bringing gifts to family members and friends starts this 15 November. This year the duty free period is being extended to 7 January 2012.

Visiting Dominicans will be permitted to bring goods valued at up to US$3,000 for friends and relatives and not pay tax.

Customs director Rafael Camilo points out that the exemption starts earlier this year and the maximum limit has been increased. In previous years the exemption began on 1 December and it was for a maximum value of US$2,000.

Camilo observed that the exemption is only for people who have not visited in the past six months, and applies to just one person per family visiting between 15 November and 7 January 2012.

The exemption this year is also authorized for sending goods via courier or cargo consolidators, to make the most of lower freight costs, but most arrive within the exemption period, and can be picked up at Customs by the visiting citizen.
