Un techo para mi pais n A Roof for my Country - is a non-profit organization run by university students and young professionals that builds houses for the poor and works with families in extreme poverty in 19 countries in Latin America. The organization enables the better off to become familiar with the way poor people in their country live, creating a social inclusion process beyond the action of building the houses. The organization, founded by a Chilean, has an active youth following in the DR.
Acento.com.do (http://Acento.com.do) reports that campaigners have built a replica of an impoverished dwelling at the La Lira Park (Lope de Vega, Abraham Lincoln & Roberto Pastoriza intersection) in Santo Domingo, an area used by the elite to protest for safety and 4% for education.
Un techo para mi pais activists say the goal is to create awareness of the need for housing policies in the DR and improvement of living conditions for people living in extreme poverty.
"Half of the country, that is 45% of the population, lives in poverty. We wanted to bring to society so they could see the poverty, the deprivation, so that people stop ignoring poverty," said Maria Garcia, Communications director for the organization.
She stated that according to the UNDP Human Development Office there is a housing deficit of over a million houses in the DR n 447,000 units need to be built and 649,000 need to be repaired.
She pointed out that this total increases by 20,000 each year, especially in vulnerable areas, while the government builds apartments costing RD$6 million (a reference to the Av. Luperon luxury apartments recently inaugurated by the government).
She said the youth organization had built 300 transitional dwellings in the DR with the help of volunteers and the beneficiaries.
