The bill sent to Congress aimed at authorizing the government to automatically adjust the electricity rate has been met with rejection from several quarters.
Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) that oversees the power distribution companies in the DR, said that he would resign if the 18% increase were imposed. "If the IMF imposes the 18%, they can find someone else for the CDEEE," he said. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the government believes that is not possible. "The increases are setbacks for our rehabilitation and are irritating," he said, as reported in acento.com.do
The president of the Federation of Industrial Associations (FAI) Ignacio Mendez called for the government to cut its spending so the electricity tariff increase would not be necessary. He said that higher power rates lead to more electricity fraud.
The president of the Organization of Commercial Entities (ONEC), Antonio Ramos said the government needed to find another solution to its impasse with the IMF that is healthy and sustainable for the economy and not the electricity tariff increase. He said the government needed to show more interest in austerity and controlling public spending.
