Campaigning organization Foro Social Alternativo has called for a 24-hour strike for Monday, but as the Ministry of Education announced that schools would be open as usual, it didn't seem much like a strike day. The state university, UASD did close for today, but all private universities were open as usual.
The strike was called in protest at fuel price increases, and to call for more funds for education, wage increases, increased budget for the UASD, and against electricity tariff increases. The strike was called to start at 6am on Monday.
Transport union spokesman Ramon Perez Figuereo said that CNTU units would support the strike. OMSA government buses will operate normally, and several other transporters also said they would be working as usual.
The Boquechivo cartoon in Diario Libre made fun of the strike, with the Diogenes character replying to Boquechivo's question if he was on strike by saying that before going on strike he had to have a job.
The Chief of the Police said that 3,000-5,000 men were on standby to respond to any disturbances.
In an editorial today, Listin Diario wonders about the purpose of the strike. "The demands are inapplicable. A government that has its days numbered will not transform its policies.
"To call a strike to ask for a government that will end in nine months to do what it has not been able to do in 12 years is illogical", writes the editorialist.
The editorialist concludes that the big losers are the poor people and the productive sector that is not in a situation to withstand more of this kind of sacrifice.
