Minister of Hacienda Daniel Toribio reported yesterday that on instructions from President Leonel Fernandez the government would pay this year's Christmas bonus checks on Thursday, 8 December. In a meeting with the National Treasurer, the Director General of the Budget and the Deputy Ministers of Hacienda, Toribio relayed the President's orders so that they begin the work required to deliver the checks on that date. The thirteenth salary check for the government's employees will amount to RD$8 billion. The amount of the Christmas check included the double payment to civilian and military retirees. "With these resources, it is expected that public employees will have larger purchasing power which will get the economy moving in December," said Minister Toribio. Last year, the government began the distribution of the thirteenth paycheck for the more than 300,000 public sector employees before 10 December. On that date, the authorities disbursed more than RD$6.5 billion to all public servants and employees of governmental agencies. Last week the government had announced that the Christmas bonus, that 13th check, would be paid on time.
