The Venezuelan ambassador in the DR, Alfredo Murga Rivas, reaffirmed the "magnificent" bilateral relations that his country continues to have with the Dominican Republic yesterday, including the PetroCaribe accords. He attributed the alleged questioning of his government's handling of the benefits and the PetroCaribe debt with the Dominican Republic to interests of foreign groups that want to fence off and sabotage the friendships that Venezuela has forged with the international community.

They are "interests that keep hoping to damage Venezuela's relationships. They are not going to succeed. There are magnificent relations between President Chavez and President Leonel Fernandez and soon, surely inside the Conference that the Latin American and Caribbean States has founded, President Fernandez will meet with President Chavez and they will have the possibility to expand the cooperation agreements," he said in an interview with Diario Libre.

Responding to questions about his government's alleged upset over the delay in the payment of the Dominican Republic quotas within the framework of the agreement, he assured the newspaper that the observations of this nature will always be made through diplomatic channels and not over a microphone.

Commenting on the upset supposedly felt by President Hugo Chavez over Fernandez's relationship with a Middle Eastern businessman, he said that "this would be interfering in the internal affairs of the Dominican Republic."

He told reporters that the Dominican-Venezuelan board of directors that works with the Dominican Oil Refinery (where there is friction over salary issues), where 49% of the shares were bought by Venezuela, is taking the necessary financial steps.
