The jury's decisions for the 2011 Corripio Foundation Prizes were announced yesterday by foundation directors Manuel Corripio, Jose Alfredo Corripio and Jacinto Gimbernard. The prize winners were Ernestina Grullon Mirre in Social Sciences (Education) for her work over decades with poor children affected by Down Syndrome, Heart Care Dominicana in the area of Natural Sciences for their work in pediatric care in the poorest parts of Santo Domingo, with emphasis on cardio-vascular surgery with excellent results, Aquiles Azar in Art, for his nearly half a century of work in drawings which have attracted national as well as international attention to the Dominican art world, and finally, in Journalism, Juan Jose Ayuso who as a reporter, investigator, and columnist has provided guidance for young journalists with his books on reporting and style over the last 50 years. Each winner gets a check for a million pesos and a statuette to mark the occasion. There were over 200 candidates for this year's awards.
