For the second time since its inception in 2006, the Dominican Global Film Festival is transported to Haiti. From 15-17 November 2011, in a spirit of cultural exchange, the festival premieres in Port-au-Prince with the feature documentary "When the Drum is Beating" (Tanbou Frape) by American director Whitney Dow, whose world premiere took place at the Tribeca Film Festival of New York, on 25 April 2011.
Founded in 2006, at the initiative of President Leonel Fernandez, the Festival's mission is to provide, in the Dominican Republic, the best cinema from around the world including films with a strong social and political message. The motto of the festival is "Global Issues, personal stories."
"When the drum is beating" (Tanbou Frape) interweaves the history of Haiti and that exceptionally long of the Septentrional Orchestra. The film moves back and forth between past and present: brutality of French colonialism, bloody revolution which gave freedom to Haitians, crushing weight of external debt, US occupation, the advent of the brutal dictatorship of Francois Duvalier, and then the hope created by the arrival in power of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the despair that followed his fall... to then address the current problems the country faces. In the midst of this history of sound and fury, for over 60 years, the "Orchestre Septentrional" has managed to remain active.
The film will be screened at the Hotel Karibe [by invitation] on 15 November, in the presence of the director Whitney Dow, Nikol Levy, Music Director of the Orchestra and of maestro and Jocelyn Alce "Ti Bas".
Additional sessions will be held free of charge. For hours and locations, see www.haitilibre.com/en/news-2771-haiti-culture-world-premiere-of-when-the-drum-is-beating.html (http://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-2771-haiti-culture-world-premiere-of-when-the-drum-is-beating.html)
