The results of the 2010 census are still not ready because of a lack of funds, says Pablo Tactuk, director of the National Statistics Office, as reported in El Caribe. He said he is working with the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Temistocles Montas to secure the funds. A year after the census being conducted, Tactuk said the process of compiling the statistics is "very advanced."

Tactuk was speaking at a press conference called at the Presidential Palace on the occasion of the celebration of the 6th Statistical Conference of the Americas of ECLAC (SCA-ECLAC) in Punta Cana. A total of 63 delegates from 31 countries and 43 representatives of international organizations are taking part from 16 to 18 November 2011. Authorities and experts will analyze various issues relating to the development of statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean, announced the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

During the meeting, ministers, directors of national statistical offices, officials from other public institutions and central banks, and specialists from international organizations will focus discussions on the development of environmental statistics, the 2010 round of population censuses and the future challenges of national statistical systems in three seminars during the conference.

The opening keynote speech will be delivered by Pablo Tactuk, director of the National Statistical Office of the Dominican Republic (ONE) and chair of SCA-ECLAC, and Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of ECLAC will take part by video link.

A session organized by ECLAC and the Government of Haiti will also be held during the Conference to discuss the support that the regional statistical community will provide for conducting a census in Haiti in 2013 and for strengthening Haitian statistics.

The delegates will also discuss the proposed updating of the Strategic Plan 2005-2015 which defines the mission, vision, specific strategic objectives and the main lines of action in which the conference will focus its efforts towards 2015.

In addition, the draft of the biennial program of regional and international cooperation activities of the Conference of 2012-2013 will also be presented.

The Member States will also be familiarized with and analyze the report on the implementation of the 2009-2011 biennial program of regional and international cooperation activities and finally they will elect a new Executive Committee of the conference for the period 2011-2012.

SCA is a subsidiary body of ECLAC that promotes the development and improvement of national statistics, ensuring that they are comparable internationally, in addition to promoting international, regional and bilateral cooperation in the area of statistics in the region.
