Diabetes affects as much as 15% of the Dominican population and is causing concern among specialists in the field. A preliminary report by Dr. Felix Escano says that there is a high rate of diabetes-related cardiovascular incidents in the country, mostly (68.8%) affecting people who are overweight. At a global level, there are 366 million people with diabetes, 80% of whom are overweight. Diabetes is a non-transmittable chronic illness that is responsible for 60% of the deaths in the world, according to an article in Diario Libre. Because there are genetic as well as environmental factors, including obesity and lack of exercise, specialists recommend a change or an improvement in eating habits and increased exercise.
