Doctors at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) have had to perform several autopsies in cemeteries in Santiago due to the fact that the morgue at the Jose Maria Cabral Regional Hospital is closed, according to statements from several pathologists. The morgue was closed for a series of repairs to damage caused by flooding brought on by the recent rains.

One of the doctors working at Inacif who asked not to be identified, confirmed that they have been forced to carry out two autopsies in the Las Charcas and El Ingenio Abajo cemeteries. "They should equip an area for autopsies in the Cabral y Baez Hospital and prevent these difficulties," said the doctor.

However, the Inacif medical director, pathologist Victor Liriano, denied that some autopsies are being done in the cemeteries of the city of Santiago. He said that the autopsies are being done temporarily in the hospital in Navarrete, as well as in the San Vicente de Paul Hospital in San Francisco de Macoris. However, some bodies taken to the Cabral y Baez Hospital have been returned to their families without autopsies due to the lack of an ambulance to take the bodies to Navarrete. The Inacif director said that the morgue would be reopened in a week or two once repairs are completed.
