Even in defeat, Aguilas win. The Aguilas Cibaenas lost a baseball game last night 3-2 to the Leones del Escogido, but they still had a reason to celebrate. One of their long-standing players, Mendy Lopez, made history as he took over the Cibao Stadium, Santiago, the Cibao Valley and all the national baseball fanatics, as he became, with 61, the all-time homerun leader in the Dominican Republic's Winter League baseball. Mendy, facing the pitching of the United States lefthander John Gaub, tied the game at two apiece in the seventh inning, as he connected for a homerun that allowed him to pass Felix Jose on the all-time list. He had tied with Jose at 60 last 6 November when the Aguilas defeated the Tigres del Licey 10-2 in the venerable Estadio Quisqueya.

Lopez, who added a double in the fifth and scored the first run for the Aguilas, passes Jose during his 14th season in the Dominican Professional Baseball, all of which have been played with the team from Santiago. Lopez also has the highest frequency of all the ball players who have hit 50 or more homeruns, as he hits the ball out of the park about once every 22 trips to the plate. Felix Jose, whose record he broke, has a better overall batting average at .281 to Lopez' .260 at the start of this season. The list of the all-time homerun leaders in Dominican baseball is now headed by Lopez, and followed by Jose (60), Ricardo Carty (59), Israel Alcantara (52), Guillermo Garcia (51), Winston n Chilote - Llenas (50), Alonzo Perry (49), Tony Batista (46), Rafael Batista (45) and Julian Yan (44).

Mendy, with tears in his eyes, was congratulated with a standing ovation from the fans in the Estadio Cibao, his teammates, of the opposition Escogido team, the manager Felix Fermin, from Winston n Chilote - Llenas, from the general manager of Escogido Moises Alou, and from his father, who is ill but came to the stadium to embrace his son.
