The common crimes that affect the country continue to gather strength in schools, especially public schools in the poorest areas where students are the main targets for robberies, fights and assaults, according to a report in Diario Libre. The problem is compounded by the fact that only 1,983 policemen are allocated to over 5,000 schools, an 80% deficit. So far this year, the School Police, part of the National Police, has registered 101 cases of violence in crimes that occurred in several educational centers in the south, the east, the south-central region, the northwest, Santo Domingo North, the province of Santo Domingo and the National District.

Students are stripped of their belongings in their backpacks when they enter or leave school. According to reports and investigations by School Police supervisors at a national level, the most frequent cases of violence in the schools, so far this year, involve fights, robberies, assaults, threats and thefts. Fights mostly occur between students who bring in bladed weapons. There are also cases of robberies in cafeterias, of furnishings, batteries, television sets, computers, laptops, washbasins and even toilets.

Even the watchmen are subject to violence as was the case of the employee who had to have his hand reattached after it was cut off by a gang of thieves trying to rob the school where he was posted.
