The latest study by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) found an overall improvement in the Dominican Republic's Human Development Index, but generally poor standings compared to other Latin American countries. According to Listin Diario and Hoy newspapers, the DR occupies the 98th position among the 187 countries studied, an improvement of two points over last year. However they fell nine points in education and wealth distribution. Valerie Julliand, UNDP representative in the country presented the report during a conference at the Catholic University of Santo Domingo yesterday. The report places the Dominican Republic in 24th position among the 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations. While there was an improvement in the Index, moving from .686 to .689, "despite this growth the country lost nine positions due to the inequality of income distribution and education."

In health the country is in 20th position of 29 nations, in education 29 among 33 in Latin America and the Caribbean and at global level 117 of 187. Gender inequality is another issue, with the country ranked 17th on a list of 26 countries in the region, and the fertility rate among adolescents placed the country at 32 among the 33 nations in the region, and at 163 of the 187 in the world. In conclusion, the study shows that while there have been improvements over the last 30 years, there are still great challenges in the areas of education and health.
