The Chief of Police, Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, said yesterday that the institution would take steps to punish any police agent who failed to protect women who are victims of gender violence. He pointed out that it was the duty of the police under Article 91 of Law 76-02 and Law 24-97, which deals with violence against women and family. In a memorandum sent to all police stations in the country, the Police Chief said that whenever a woman comes in and complains of mistreatment, physical or psychological, or threats of bodily harm, she should be offered the proper protection and the case must be reported to the Justice Department at once.
