The Dominican community abroad is proposing that second and third generation Dominicans should be able to automatically acquire Dominican citizenship through line of descent, without having to wait until the age of 18 as is currently stipulated in the Dominican constitution. The proposal was made during a meeting of the Consejos Consultivos de la Presidencia de los Dominicanos en el Exterior (CCPDE), a Dominican expatriate advisory board in New York. President Leonel Fernandez was present at that particular meeting during his last trip to New York.
