Yesterday the Chamber of Deputies approved four loan contracts for a total amount estimated to be at RD$10.1 billion. The money will be spent on the second Metro line in Santo Domingo and other planned infrastructure projects that President Leonel Fernandez wants to inaugurate before he leaves office on 16 August 2012. Most of the money is for the Metro and comes from the French Development Agency. The contracts were passed with the favorable vote of 93 deputies, with seven against and several abstentions. In fact 76 deputies, mostly from the PRD, did not vote on the loan packages, on the grounds that the loans went against the Budget Law because it exceeds this year's debt limit. Two other loans were approved. One was for US$37 million to improve electricity transmission lines in the south and west of the country and the other was for RD$300 million to improve the cleanup of the city of Santo Domingo.
