Producers have pledged to provide sufficient poultry and pork for Christmas, due to the fact that the conditions for the production to increase are present and there will not be any shortages of these foods this time of the year. The president of the Northern Region Chicken Farmers Association (Asopollon), Jose Lopez, said that the producers expect a record production for the month of December. He said that at present, chicken production in the Cibao is at 16 million units a month, but this will increase to 18 million for December. Lopez acknowledged that in November there were some difficulties in acquiring the low-quality inputs which made the weight of the poultry go down, but this situation has practically been taken care of.
In the Cibao, a pound of chicken at the farm costs RD$25 a pound, in supermarkets frozen chicken costs RD$37 to RD$40 a pound, and fresh poultry is at RD$44 a pound. In another area, Lopez suggested that the government should regulate the sale of chickens and other products to Haiti. The producer said that an informal trade in chickens and eggs takes place with the neighboring country and if it were regulated, the country could obtain more benefits. He said that some people are bulk buying chickens and taking them to the frontier for sale.
Meanwhile, the president of the Moca and Licey Small and Medium Pork Producers Association (Aproamorli), Ambiorix Cabrera, said that pork production would be increased from 80,000 to 100,000 units for the month of December. The pork farmers leader said that at present a kilo of pork on the farm has a production cost of RD$71 pesos and it is sold at RD$72, while a pound of pork is sold at between RD$60 and RD$65 a pound in the supermarkets. He also took the opportunity to warn that if the government does not stop the mass importation of this meat, the pork-producing sector would go bankrupt.
