Officials from the Basel Convention, which demands strict controls on used batteries, have met with the Minister of the Environment, Ernesto Reyna, and the Director general of Customs, Rafael Camilo to discuss how the Dominican Republic could enter into compliance with the Convention. The Basel Convention is a multilateral agreement promoted by the United Nations, which prohibits the export of used batteries. The idea is for these batteries to be recycled locally. As part of the meeting, Brian Wilson of the International Lead Management Center spoke with the local environmentalists. Both Reyna and Camilo, according to El Caribe, reiterated their support for the use of green technology by the local manufacturer, Meteoro, in its step-by-step recycling program that is certified by the international agency.
