Crocs and lizards are endangered

The American crocodile and Ricord lizard as well as marine turtle populations are in danger of extinction in the country, according to a red list that was released over the weekend by the Ministry of the Environment. The endangered flora on the list includes orchids and bromeliads. The reasons given by the ministry for the size of the list, which contains dozens of species and plants, include destruction of native habitats, ecosystem breakdown, hunting and introduced species. A report in Hoy newspaper says that the greatest threat is the increase of the farming frontier in the species' habitats. The list was drawn up by local and international experts.
