The Dominican Republic is the eighth most damaged country in the world due to the effects of climate change, and 3% of the world's greenhouse gases are produced in the country, according to a report in El Nuevo Diario.

The information comes an Oxfam report released yesterday. The report stresses that on an island nation like the Dominican Republic, one of the most serious concerns is sea level rise, which could wipe out the coastal areas in many parts. Studies show that 70% of the population resides and works in the coastal areas and much of the nation's infrastructure including highways and airports are near the coastline. Oxfam organized a "Family Day for Climate Change" yesterday in a park in Santo Domingo to mark the release of the report. The event also coincided with the beginning of the XVII World Summit on Climate Change that begins today in Durban, South Africa.
