PRD vice-presidential candidate Luis Abinader has dissociated the former President Hipolito Mejia from the alleged drug trafficker who was leading a political movement in support of the PRD presidential candidate. The running mate on the Mejia ticket said that he did not know Oscar Ezequiel Rodriguez Cruz, who is the subject of an extradition request by the United States and the president of the "Renacer con Papa" movement.
Abinader stressed that the former President has been the principal flag bearer of the fight against drugs, adding that when Mejia was President he extradited more than 50 people by decree. "We do not know about this case. Based on what we have seen in the press I think that the government should explain why military personnel were protecting him. He is not in any way linked to or a member of the National Campaign Directorate," he said. He pointed out that there are thousands of political movements. Abinader was interviewed by Diario Libre reporters at the end of a meeting between former President Mejia and representatives of the Inter American Press Society (SIP). The reporters did not have access to the meeting and Mejia did not leave until the reporters had left.
