A rather pale hurricane season, with nothing major occurring in the Dominican Republic, ends tomorrow, November 30. According to Hoy newspaper, only two storms touched the country: Tropical Storm Emily and Hurricane Irene. These two storms occured in August, but damage was light compared to other events in former years.

Just as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had predicted, the season itself was "above normal." NOAA forecast between 12 and 18 tropical storms, six to eight hurricanes and three to six severe hurricanes. There were 17 tropical depressions, 16 storms, four hurricanes and three severe hurricanes in the 2011 season. Although no major storms hit the country, there was some loss of life and thousands of people were displaced by flooding caused by Emily. A few days later, on August 22, Hurricane Irene, a category 1 hurricane, passed over Dominican territory and caused four deaths, cut off some 90 communities, damaged over 6000 houses and forced 37,000 people to seek emergency shelter. The hardest hit areas were San Cristobal and San Jose de Ocoa provinces. Ocoa received over 11 inches of rain in just 27 hours.
