In Miches, in the east of the Dominican Republic, forty people survived when their flimsy boat floundered off the coast in the rough waters of the Atlantic as the group attempted an illegal trip to Puerto Rico. Authorities from the Dominican Navy said that the boat carrying 27 men and 13 women got into trouble in the area of Vacama, several nautical miles from Miches due to the heavy wave action in the ocean (the National Meteorological Office - Onamet - had posted small craft warnings all weekend long). The group was taken into custody by the local Navy commander. The boat they had used, which was 23 feet long, began to fill with water and the passengers had to swim to shore. A helicopter piloted by Pedro Yarull and Jose Garcia Armenteros spotted the craft and informed the Naval authorities.
