An official mission of the government's economic team left yesterday for Washington D.C. to continue negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the evaluations of the seventh and eighth reviews of the Stand-by arrangement for a total of US$1.7 billion signed with the IMF in 2009.

The Dominican mission is headed by the Minister of Hacienda, Daniel Toribio and Central Bank Governor Hector Valdez Albizu, who traveled to the United States yesterday. A team of specialists from the government economic team left the country on Monday afternoon.

At present, there is an impasse between the government and the IMF, related to the issue of electricity. In this case the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas reported that the IMF has asked for an 18% increase in the electricity rates, which was met with widespread rejection in the country.
