The Minister of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz said yesterday that Army Corporal Jose Alberto Vasquez Morla had been dishonorably discharged. Vasquez Morla was employed as a driver for Oscar Ezequiel Rodriguez Cruz, who is requested in extradition by the United States authorities on drug trafficking charges. The corporal was assigned to the National Investigation Department (DNI) but he also worked at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. According to the general, the non-commissioned officer violated Circular No. 4/2006 that says that any military official who has any sort of relationship with drug traffickers or with organized crime will be dishonorably discharged. Nonetheless, Perez Feliz would not reveal the names of the officers who were initially said to have protected Rodriguez Cruz, and he added, "that neither the Armed Forces nor the National Police will hide anything and we are going to send everyone involved in this case to jail and anyone else who might appear."

Meanwhile, the Vice President, Rafael Alburquerque, said that this shows that there is no ceasefire here against drug trafficking and murderers. "This demonstrates that no matter who, he will be pursued, arrested and sent to trial and they will also be subject to extradition," said Alburquerque, referring to Rodriguez Cruz and the officer who was discharged. Alburquerque said that if any military personnel were involved in the case, they would be investigated and sent to trial "because we do not hide anything, no matter who commits the crime."
