Four men were killed yesterday at kilometer 22 of the Las Americas Expressway. Two of them were hit by gunshots fired by three men who were traveling in a blue Honda Accord.

The two men shot dead inside a gray Ford Escape were identified as Hector Rafael Guzman Jimenez and/or Nelson Bienvenido Baez who has several cards in his file in the police archives, while his companion, who was driving the SUV, was named as Lorenzo Ruiz Montero (Tony), who also had a rap sheet that included armed robbery, murders and drug offenses.

The vehicle had an official license plate. Last night the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development said that that SUV was not part of its fleet as had been reported in some media. The license plate itself had been reported lost by Juan Francisco Perez on 31 August.

After being shot, their vehicle, which was traveling eastwards, went out of control and crashed head-on with a small pickup transporting plantains, killing both its occupants.

According to witnesses, the three men who were traveling in the blue Honda Accord opened fire against the Ford Escape, hitting it 25 times, eleven of the shots hitting the occupants. "They shot them with automatic rifles and pistols, those people came well prepared to kill those two," said one eyewitness who requested anonimity.

The driver of the SUV suffered three shots to the head, apparently at close range.

Police agents began the pursuit of the three men who killed Hector Rafael Guzman Jimenez and/or Nelson Bienvenido Baez, as well as Lorenzo Ruiz Montero (Tony.)

A police source said that the crime has the imprint of a drug-trafficking related settling of accounts. Nonetheless, the official said that the National Police had opened an investigation with the aim of establishing the real causes of the crime. "This is just preliminary. It appears to have been a settling of accounts based on the way they were killed, 25 shots to that SUV, and eleven of them hit their bodies, but anyway, we have started an investigation," he said.
