New HIV infections have gone down by 25% since 2001, according to the United Nations World AIDS Day message for the Dominican Republic. The message points out that access to services for HIV prevention in pregnant women has succeeded in reducing the number of children contracting the virus and infant deaths from AIDS.

According to the Report on Estimates and Projections of the Prevalence of HIV and the Disease Burden, it was said that the country, for 2011, had 58,130 people with HIV, with 60% being women and of that population the greater part is made up of women between the ages of 15 and 49. Nonetheless, they called upon the international community to explore innovative sources of financing and they encouraged countries like the Dominican Republic to identify and implement strategies to increase the sustainability of the fight against HIV in the face of the challenges of the world crisis.
