The passing of the educator Zoraida Heredia de Suncar, 93, marks the loss of one of Dominican education's National Treasures. She was the author of many textbooks for children, written during the Trujillo Era. In an interview with Hoy reporter Soila Paniagua, the teacher recalled the respect, order and cleanliness that were the norm in the schools in her day. She noted that the teachers were obliged to go door to door to make sure that they garnered all of the students in their districts. Heredia was a lawyer by training, a graduate of the University of Santo Domingo and she was a Deputy Minister of Education, a Deputy Chancellor of the Republic and served as the liaison between the government and the United Nations for the establishment of the International Research and Training Institute for the Promotion of Women (INSTRAW).
