The Superintendent of Electricity (SIE) says that despite increasing costs, electricity rates will remain at the same level as last month. The SIE said that fuel oil had gone up 1.67%, while natural gas had declined in price and coal prices were stable. On the other hand, the exchange rate went from RD$38.33 to RD$38.38 pesos to the dollar. These changes meant a 1.11% increase in the index price for electricity, and the government will pay RD$1.4 billion in subsidies to ensure the rates do not go up. So far this year the government has spent RD$14.4 billion on these subsidies, as reported in El Nuevo Diario.
