The country has the challenge of ensuring that the electricity rates "correspond to market criteria" and that "there is sufficient will to construct a generation matrix" which is more competitive in pricing. The president of the Dominican Republic Industrial Association (AIRD), Ligia Bonetti de Valiente argued that "electric energy constitutes a basic input for many of our industries and until now it has been marked by factors of a political and social nature, often far removed from economic reasons." Speaking during a reception hosted by the AIRD, the business leader said that the association would search for ways to bring the National Industrial Development Plan up to date.
