The National Police Chief launched the Safe Christmas Plan 2011 yesterday, with the aim of strengthening security measures for citizens across the country, especially in commercial, residential and entertainment areas.
The measures to be implemented were announced by his Deputy, General Victor Campusano Jimenez, who said that the preventive steps would be strongest in the main metropolitan areas. "In this first phase 17,000 agents will be assigned to help the people, and they will have large-scale logistical support in order to deal with any event that might affect people's peaceful existence," he said.
General Campusano Jimenez said that to ensure the plan's success, the Police have the decisive support of the government, headed by President Leonel Fernandez and the effective leadership of Major General Jose A. Polanco Gomez, the Chief of the National Police. Speaking in representation of Major General Polanco Gomez, the Deputy Chief said that the Plan, which goes into effect today, continues until 7 January, and will place special emphasis on guaranteeing citizen safety, in order to keep criminals from disturbing citizens and thousands of local and foreign visitors who choose the Dominican Republic for their Christmas and New Year celebrations. He stressed that the security measures involve a strong police presence in residential, commercial and entertainment areas, to ensure public safety. He told reporters that they are going to work tirelessly to save lives, protect property and prevent crime.
