Missions from the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean Common Market (Caricom) began a series of negotiations on Monday to explore prospects for reaching a bilateral agreement beyond the economic and commercial links that the area has with the European Community, reports El Nuevo Diario.

According to the Minister for Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas, the Caricom delegation will be headed by the new secretary general, Irwin LaRocque. The plan is to create a joint commission to define a cooperation agenda beyond the links with the European Union, as in the case of Chile, Venezuela, Mexico and Cuba. LaRocque stressed that despite the stronger links between the peoples of the Caribbean countries and the increasing commercial volume between the Dominican Republic and Caricom, he believes that it is important to tackle issues of more functional cooperation, as in the areas of health, higher education and the environment.
