The courage, bravery, dedication and consistency that Sonia Pierre displayed during her fight for the rights of Dominicans of Haitian ancestry were highlighted yesterday by several prominent figures who attended the first day of her wake in the Altagracia Funeral Home, reports Diario Libre.

"She was a defender of human rights. She was a strong, brave woman, who despite the political conditions and ideologies always stood firm and knew how to come out ahead despite the contradictions, because she believed in democracy," said Sergia Galvan, from the Women and Health Collective. Pierre passed away on Sunday after suffering a massive heart attack at just 48 years of age. The wake will continue today and she will be buried in Villa Altagracia tomorrow.

Human rights activist Virgilio Almanzar said that Pierre's death was a "great loss" for human rights campaigners, telling reporters that they would take charge of continuing her legacy. The same pledge was made by Manuel Maria Mercedes from the Human Rights Commission, who regretted that Pierre's voice had been lost when it was most needed by Dominicans of Haitian origin. Political leaders including Hipolito Mejia, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, Max Puig and Alfredo Pacheco expressed their condolences and solidarity with the family of the prominent activist. For more than 30 years, Pierre campaigned for the Dominican state to recognize the citizenship rights of Dominicans of Haitian ancestry, a stance that generated recognition internationally and rejection and rancor locally. Yesterday, for this reason, her relatives asked the press to leave the funeral home.
