At least 10 people lost their lives on the roads of the Dominican Republic yesterday.
Diario Libre reports that six were killed in two accidents that occurred yesterday in the eastern region, five of them in a crash between a bus and a car on the Higuey-Bavaro highway, apparently when one of the drivers fell asleep at the wheel in the early hours. The deceased were identified as Ambiorix de Jesus Rodriguez Hernandez, 29, Mercedes Rodriguez, 25, Elizabeth Moyamde, 30, Juan Ignacio Rodriguez and Francisco Melciades Marmolejos, both 30.
The accident occurred between a Toyota Corolla without license plates, and a private, white, Caico bus driven by Ramon Leonardo Ulloa, 32, who lives in the La Imagen sector of Higuey. The bus was transporting hotel employees and the car was returning to the city. The collision happened at around 4:00am yesterday morning. The bodies were taken to the morgue at the Our Lady of Altagracia Hospital in Higuey. In a separate incident, Stalin Furi was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a vehicle that did not stop.
In Cabrera in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province, two teenagers and an adult died when an SUV hit their motorcycle. The accident occurred just outside of Cabrera on the highway to Nagua. In Bonao, a well-known teacher was also hit by a vehicle while riding his motorcycle. During the Christmas season there is a marked increase in traffic accidents.
