The reinforcement of patrols with the arrival of the Christmas season has been welcomed by traders as well as citizens. Yesterday, on Santo Domingo's Duarte Avenue, one of the major commercial arteries in the country, several patrols were in evidence as deterrents to criminals. National Police spokesman Maximo Baez Aybar said that the number of agents patrolling the streets across the country would be raised to 21,000 when public and private entities begin paying employees their Christmas bonuses. He reiterated that the operation included the Feast of the Three Kings and that the aim was to save lives and protect property on the days when most money is circulating. The police were posted at key points in the main city centers, near commercial banks, on Calle El Conde and Mella, Tiradentes and Lope de Vega Avenues, and other places.
